Letztes Wochende war es Zeit für meine erste Kaffee-Bildungsreise für meinen Blog! Es ging auf nach Berlin, der Hauptstadt Deutschlands, auch was Kaffee betrifft – ich hatte eine großartige Zeit, über die ich im Nachfolgenden auf Deutsch und Englisch berichten möchte.
It was time for my first coffee-related educational journey for my blog last weekend! I was off to Berlin, Germany’s capital, also when it comes to coffee – I had a marvellous time that I am going to give a little account of in the following, both in German and English.
Das dritte Berlin Coffee Festival fand vom 1. bis 4. September 2017 statt und ich war am 2. und 3. September vor Ort, um andere deutschsprachige Kaffeeblogger kennenzulernen, mehr über die Rolle von Kaffee in sozialen Medien zu erfahren – und natürlich, um ganz viel exzellenten Kaffee zu probieren. Am Samstag startete ich also mit Vollgas beim von Kaffeeherz organisierten Blogger Breakfast ins Festival. Unser Gastgeber Kaffeekirsche stellte uns in der gerade drei Wochen jungen neuen Filiale ein wunderbares Frühstück mit Bircher-Müsli, Croissant und zwei Kaffees (ich habe mich natürlich für Flat Whites entschieden 😉 ) zur Verfügung – perfekte Nervennahrung für zwei Vorträge und eine Kaffeeverkostung.
The third Berlin Coffee Festival took place from September 1st till September 4th 2017, and I was there on September 2nd and 3rd, in order to get to know other German-speaking coffee bloggers, to learn more about the role of coffee in social media – and of course, in order to try lots of excellent coffee. At Saturday’s Blogger Breakfast that was organised by Kaffeeherz I started into the festival at full throttle. Our host Kaffeekirsche provided a wonderful breakfast with fresh muesli, croissants, and two coffees (of course I went for flat whites 😉 ) at their only three weeks old new branch – perfect brain food for two talks and a coffee cupping.
Es war sehr interessant, von Coffee Circle mehr über die Bedeutung von digitalen Medien als Marketingstrategie zu erfahren und dabei zwei verschiedene Röstungen von Kaffeekirsche zu testen: Mein Favorit war die Kenia-Röstung mit ihrem samtig-fruchtigen und gleizeitig süßen Aroma mit leichten Schokoladennoten, da sie gerade im starken Flat White nicht zu aufdringlich war.
It was really interesting to learn more about the importance of digital media as part of marketing strategies from Coffee Circle, and being able to taste two different roasts by Kaffeekirsche at the same time: With its velvety-fruity and at the same time sweet aroma with hints of chocolate, the Kenia roast was my favourite as it was not too overpowering in the strong flat whites.
Beim Cupping gab es u.a. Kaffees zu probieren, die nun als Inhalt meines Goodie Bags meine Küche zieren und darauf warten frisch vermahlen zu werden. 🙂 Mein persönlicher Favorit des Cuppings war der wunderbar beerig-fruchtige Yirgacheffe von Coffee Circle – abgesehen natürlich von der Kenia-Röstung von Kaffeekirsche, der man so ganz ohne Milch überraschend parfümig duftende Noten entlocken konnte. Schön war beim Cupping vor allem zu lernen, dass es kein Richtig und kein Falsch beim Besprechen von Kaffee gibt. Dies ist vor allem nicht verwunderlich, wenn man bedenkt, dass Kaffee doppelt so viele Aromaten enthält wie Wein!
At the cupping we tested some of the coffees that, as part of the goodie bag, now grace my kitchen and wait to be freshly ground. 🙂 My personal favourite of the cupping was the wonderfully fruity Coffee Circle Yirgacheffe with its strong berry aftertaste – and of course the Kenya roast by Kaffeekirsche that shines with perfumy notes when it is enjoyed plain and without milk. During the cupping, it was lovely to learn that there is no such thing as right or wrong when it comes to discussing coffee. This is not so surprising after all, when taking into account that coffee contains twice as many aromatic compounds as wine!
Zu guter Letzt gab es dann noch einen informativen Beitrag von Theresa von The Way to Coffee, in dem sie uns Tipps zum Thema Fotokomposition und Instagram mit auf den Weg gegeben hat.
Last but not least, Theresa from The Way to Coffee gave an informative talk in which she revealed tips concerning photo composition and Instagram.
Nach dem Frühstück ging es zu einem weiteren Vortrag zum Thema Bloggen und soziale Medien in der mittlerweile schon legendären Rösterei The Barn im Prenzlauer Berg. Mit RomediaStudio gab es sogar Gäste aus Rom, die Erfahrungen vom Dreh einer Kaffeedokumentation geteilt haben. Hier geht es zum Kaffee-Blog von Lucas, dem Kaffee-Geek aus Italien!
After breakfast, it was time to head to another talk about blogging and social media in the by now legendary roastery The Barn in the district Prenzlauer Berg. Als Abschluss dieses doch sehr geistig fordernden Tages ging es dann ganz entspannt zum Latte Art Throwdown bei St. Oberholz – für mich als im Moment winterschlafende Barista ein absolutes Fest! Mir juckten förmlich die Finger, mich nach fünf Jahren doch spontan an der Maschine zu versuchen.
As a close of this intellectually not unchallenging day, I paid a relaxed visit to the latte art throw-down at St. Oberholz – being a hibernating barista, this was an absolute ball! I really had to fight my itching fingers that wanted to try their luck after five years off the coffee machine.
Am Sonntag machte ich mich nach einem ausgiebigen Erkundungsspaziergang durch meine Lieblingsstadtteile Kreuzberg und Friedrichshain nachmittags auf den Weg zum großen Kaffeemarkt in der Markthalle Neun. Vor lauter Probieren brummte mir dort schon nach kürzester Zeit der Kopf vom Koffein, aber ich habe viele positive Eindrücke von fantastischen Kaffeeröstern mitnehmen können. Mein persönlicher Favorit war Han Coffee Roasters mit wunderbar würzig-schokoladigem vietnamesischen Kaffee, der ganz traditionell mit süßer Kondensmilch zubereitet wird. Darüber hinaus sind mir Philosoffee mit ihrem unwiderstehlichen Coldbrew und Nitro-Coldbrew in Erinnerung geblieben, ebenso wie die Populus Coffee mit ihrem frisch-herben Filterkaffee aus Guatemala. Diese Worte machen es schon deutlich: Die Vielfalt auf dem großen Kaffeemarkt war erstaunlich und inspirierend – und vor allem hat sie mir noch mehr Lust gemacht, die Welt des Kaffees auf dem ganzen Globus weiter auszukundschaften! ❤
On Sunday afternoon, I visited the big coffee market at the Markthalle Neun after an extensive exploration walk through my favourite districts Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. My head started buzzing only after a short time because of all the caffeine but I managed to collect many positive impressions of fantastic coffee roasters. My personal favourite were Han Coffee Roasters with wonderfully spicy-chocolatey Vietnamese coffee that is traditionally prepared with sweet condensed milk. Apart from this, Philosoffee with their irresistible coldbrew and nitro coldbrew as well as Populus Coffee with their freshly tart Guatemala filter coffee stayed in my memory. These words already show how stunning and inspiring the diversity at the big coffee market was – without a doubt it encouraged me even more to explore the world of coffee all over the globe! ❤
